Learning Journal 6

This semester went by so fast! It's hard to believe that this is my last blog. It brings a small teardrop to my eye. Doing my podcast was fun, it will defiantly be part of my final project. Podcasts are great because they can be about really specific topics. For instance you could never do a radio show about moped engines because in the small reach of a radio station their would be a lack of interest. If you create a podcast you are likely to get many listeners from all around the world who love their moped engines.
When it comes to web site design I learned that simple is better. The easiest most enjoyable sites to use are simple and strait forward. Just because you can put things on a website doesnt mean you should. Most websites are started with purpose, from that purpose a mission statement is formed. From that point the rest of the site is developed while always keeping that mission in mind.

Jing is great!

I just completed the extra credit assignment monday night. This assignment uses Jing. Where has it been all of my life? I do a lot of video editing work and I think that this will be great so that I can show people how to create some of the video effects I have come up with. And who wouldn't want to be able to create a screen shot any time they wanted. Just the other day I was creating a south park character using a cool flash web site. The only problem with flash is that I couldn't save the picture when I was done with it. Now I am going to go back create the character and simply take a screen shot of it! The only draw back is that the free version doesn't allow you to make actual video files. I guess they have to make money some how. This is still a great program, and its even better because it is free!

social bookmarking

I would say that most everyone my age belongs to some sort of social book marking web site. Whether it is facebook, myspace, or twitter it allows us to communicate with people that we would otherwise never talk to. I never use these social websites for my close friends (I can just call them), but when it comes to getting a hold of someone that you have lost contact with it is super easy to track some one down and communicate with them. Another thing I use these websites for is looking at pictures that I have been in. Lets say that a distant friend takes a picture that you are in. In real life you may never see that picture, but on a website like facebook or myspace you can enjoy the pictures any time you want.

I learned some very useful search techniques that will help me find information faster. For example putting two or more words together in parenthesis will tell the search engine to search for that phrase instead of just the words. I also learned that their is a thing called the invisible web that is thought to be many times bigger than the web we all know and love. The invisible web includes databases of all shapes and sizes.

yah for viruses

This week I learned about how to keep your PC safe from viruses. Thank goodness I have a mac. The most interesting thing about class this week was the 60 minutes video. The most disturbing thing was seeing peoples identities getting sold online. Identity theft is a real problem in this world, and I can now see why some one would want to get Identity theft insurance.

First Reflection

Hello All,
This is my first reflection on my Intro to web technology class at NCCC. So far I have learned what is expected of me in the class (attendance, gradeing, projects......). All that good first week of school information. I have also started learning some of the course material. We just did a class dicussion on a video about the future of technology. The assignment is that you watch the video and then have and online discussion about it. I was reading other peoples comments about it and they all found it to be extremely informative and fun. I felt the same way about it, however I had some negative comments about it as well. I want to spark some conversation and discussion so I am playing devils advocate by chalanging the video.

I found a specific website we learned about interesting, its called Webopedia.com, it has just about anything you might want to know about the internet.
